JOHN O’BRIEN a native of Los Angeles and avid surfer, paints waves and photographs surf culture to inspire wonder and aloha. He uses traditional techniques in an electronic way to create ethereal one-of-a-kind digital paintings.
His work has been shown in Klapper Gallery, the Classic Surf Gallery, and the California Heritage Museum, among other venues, and he is the founder of surferdreams.com.
“John O’Brien’s original images of the crucial part of surfing, the waves, bring a fresh perspective to the surf art genre,” wrote surf historian, surf art collector, and Classic Surf Gallery owner Allan Seymour in 2006.
His career as an artist and graphic designer also includes much time at The New Yorker, Architectural Digest, Warner Bros., and Disney. He holds a BA in English from the University of California at Berkeley and a BA in philosophy from Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland.
